Authorization Procedure for Sexologists -

Based on the Nordic Association of Clinical Sexology (NACS) Education Requirements for:

  • Specialist in Sexological Counselling (NACS)
  • Specialist in Clinical Sexology (NACS)

The National Authorization Group

    • Consists of at least three persons who are NACS authorized. It is recommended that they represent both levels of authorization.
    • Is elected by the National Sexological Organization for a period of three years.

The NACS Authorization Committee (NACSAC)

    • Confirms each nationally approved application (forwarded by the National Authorization Group).
    • Should, in case of national disagreement of applications, act as a consulting authority.
    • Should consist of the president of NACS and of one person from each of the countries that are members of NACS.
    • Each national member is elected by her/his national association, for a period of three years. All members should belong to the respective National Authorization Group.
    • The leader of NACSAC is elected by NACS for a period of three years.

Applications

    • The applicant must be a member of a national organization which is a part of NACS.
    • The applicant forwards the application either in electronic format or in one original and three copies (with relevant documentation when required) to the board of the relevant national association. The application should be in English while additional documentation can be in the native language. Qualifications that can not be formally documented must be described and made credible by the applicant. The applicant indicates the level of authorization that she/he considers relevant, based on the NACS educational requirements where the optional levels are: Specialist in Sexological Counselling (NACS) or Specialist in Clinical Sexology (NACS).
    • With the application should follow a recommendation from two members of the national organization.
    • The Board of the National Sexological Association forwards the application to the National Authorization Group.
    • The evaluation of each applicant must be based on the NACS Code of Ethics.
    • Following approval, the National Authorization Group forwards the application to the Nordic Authorization Committee for NACS approval. The approved application must, thus, be endorsed both at the national and at the Nordic level.
    • Following approval of the application by the relevant bodies the applicant can titulate herself/himself: Specialist in Sexological Counselling (NACS) or Specialist in Specialist in Clinical Sexology (NACS).
    • No applicant is allowed the use of this title until written approval of the application has been received from the National Board.
    • If the application is not endorsed by the National Authorization Group, recommendations for further necessary training should be given by the group. In cases of doubt the application must be discussed by the National Board for reaching consensus on endorsement, refusal, level change and/or need for additional training. If consensus can still not be reached the NACS Authorization Committee should be consulted.
    • If the application is not accepted by the National Authorization Group, the applicant may appeal to the National Board which is empowered to decide whether or not the application can be endorsed. In cases of doubt within the National Board, the applicant can appeal to the the NACS Authorization Committee.

«Old-timers»

    • The applicant should have at least four years of university education (or the equivalent) within a field other than sexology. The applicant should additionally have at least ten years of relevant sexological work, and have been a member of the national sexological organization for the same number (10) of years.
    • The applications should be sent to the Board of the national organization.
    • This arrangement lasts until 20.09.06 at 5 pm.

Costs

    • In order to finance the authorization process, the National Boards may find it necessary to set a price for reviewing and evaluating applications.
    • The recommendation is 250 Euro.

Reevaluation of these precedures

    • These procedures should be discussed before the 2005 NACS-meeting and be confirmed there. They should be reevaluated again in 2007.
