från Lettland, om tolerans |

| I år höll Lettland efter många om och men sin
första prideparad någonsin. Först fick paraden tillstånd. Sedan drogs tillståndet in
med hänvisning till ospecificerade säkerhetsproblem, efter att landets president gått
ut med påståenden om att paraden måste stoppas eftersom sexuella minoriteter utgör en
kränkning mot kristendomen. Därefter hävde domstolen hävningen av tillståndet, och
paraden kunde trots allt hållas. Endast ett femtiotal modiga HBTQ-aktivister vågade
ge sig ut och demonstrera. Motdemonstranterna var desto fler. Nynazistiska organisationer
och konservativa kristna marscherade med flaggan i topp. Det kastades även en del ägg.
Motdemonstranterna lyckades tvinga polisen att dirigera om prideparaden från den
fastslagna vägen, så att HBTQ-folket aldrig kom i närheten av domkyrkan.
Bottom line är dock att prideparaden trots allt hölls. För första gången, och
säkerligen inte för sista. Deltagarna kommer att bli fler, och motdemonstranterna
färre.
När paraden förlorade sitt tillstånd var det många svenskar som protesterade mot
detta. Åtminstone en av de som mailade sin protest till Lettlands sverigeambassadör fick
följande, mycket tänkvärda, svar:
Dear Mr Thorin!
Hope, you have been informed that the Riga Pride took place last Saturday. It was not an
easy event, but this was THE first time.
Tha Parade was allowed by the Court decision, which shows that Latvia is the Country of
the Rule of Law.
Though, it has been a quite an controversial subject being widely discussed in the
society, you may look at this issue against the background of the fact that only 15 years
ago (when Latvia was still occupied by the Soviet Union) homosexualism was considered to
be a crime. To turn the society to the understanding and tolerance and also the
administration to introduce the appropriate legislation, has been a hard job to do,
hasn´t it? And this does not applies only to the gay rights. We had to address all the
society building and reconstruction at once in 1991.
I hope for your understanding and also your acceptance and tolerance and I do hope that
also you will think twice before judging others from the comfortable quarters of Sweden
with your experience never been occupied and having peaceful and democratic development of
the State and of the society over the last centuries. And even here, to my great surprise,
I have seen a serious intolerance in some segments of society. Hope, that Swedish
experience will help us develop further our society.
